Weighted GPA Calculator

Free weighted GPA calculator. Mark each class Regular, Honors, or AP/IB and the standard bonus (+0.5, +1.0) gives your weighted GPA up to 5.0.

Count course rigor. Mark each class Regular, Honors, or AP/IB and the calculator adds the standard bonus so an A in an AP class is worth 5.0.

A weighted GPA rewards harder courses. Where an unweighted GPA caps every class at 4.0, a weighted scale adds a bonus for rigor: +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB. That pushes the top of the scale to 5.0 — an A in an AP class is worth 5.0, an A in an Honors class 4.5.

Set each course's level below along with its grade and credit hours. The calculator applies the bonus and credit-weights everything into your weighted GPA.

How the weighting works

Start from the standard grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, …), then add the level bonus before credit-weighting: Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0, Regular +0. So an A in an AP class scores 5.0 × its credits, while an A in a regular class scores 4.0 × its credits. Some schools cap or scale differently, but +0.5 / +1.0 is by far the most common convention.

Which GPA colleges look at

Admissions offices see your weighted GPA but very often recalculate an unweighted or their own weighted version to compare applicants fairly across schools. That's why it helps to know both — compute your unweighted number with the same courses on the main GPA calculator and report whichever your target school asks for.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted caps every course at 4.0 no matter how hard it is. Weighted adds a bonus for course rigor (Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0), so it can go above 4.0 — up to 5.0 for an A in an AP class.

How much does an AP class add?

The standard bonus is +1.0 for AP or IB and +0.5 for Honors, applied to that course's grade points before credit-weighting. Policies vary by school, but this is the most widely used scale.

Can a weighted GPA be above 4.0?

Yes — that's the point of weighting. With enough Honors and AP courses a weighted GPA commonly lands between 4.0 and 5.0.
