College GPA runs on credit hours. A typical course is 3 or 4 credits, and each grade is weighted by those credits before averaging — so your GPA reflects the load of each class, not just the count of them.

A semester (or term) GPA covers only the courses in one term. Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average across every term. This page computes a term GPA from the courses you enter; to combine it with your existing record, carry the result into the cumulative GPA calculator.
Because grades are credit-weighted, a strong grade in a 4-credit course lifts your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit lab. When you're deciding where to push for a higher grade late in a term, the heavier-credit courses move your GPA the most.
Convert each grade to points on the 4.0 scale, multiply by that course's credit hours, add up the quality points, and divide by total credit hours. It's a credit-weighted average, not a plain one.
Broadly, 3.5+ is strong, 3.0–3.5 is solid, and Latin honors typically begin around 3.5 (cum laude) and rise from there. Standards differ by school and major.
