A percentage grade is the most common raw marking unit in the world, but the same number means very different things from one country to the next. In the United States 90% is an A, while in the United Kingdom 70% can already be a top First and 85% is almost unheard of. That is why a percentage always has to be read against the national scale it came from before it can be turned into a GPA.
The German grade runs from 1.0 to 5.0 and is inverted, so 1.0 (sehr gut) is the best mark and 4.0 (ausreichend) is the lowest pass, while a 5.0 is a fail. German marking is strict, which means a 2.5 is already a solid result and grades under 2.0 are strong. The same scale is used across Germany and Austria, and international offices convert it with the modified Bavarian formula.
