The converter works by anchoring both scales on the US 4.0 GPA, which is the most widely recognised reference point for comparing grades internationally. Your US letter grade is placed on the 0 to 4.0 scale first, then expressed as GPA.
US letter grades run from A down to F, usually with plus and minus modifiers, and each letter maps to a fixed grade point. An A is 4.0 and roughly 93 to 100 percent, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, and an F is a fail below about 60 percent.
